The Cybersecurity Threat Landscape for Indian SMBs
Indian SMBs are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals. The myth that "we are too small to be a target" is dangerously outdated — SMBs are targeted precisely because they have weaker security while still holding valuable data.
1. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Everywhere
MFA is the single most effective defence against account takeover. Enable it on email, banking, cloud services, and your website admin panel.
2. Keep All Software Updated
70% of successful attacks exploit known vulnerabilities with available patches. Enable automatic updates for your OS, web server, CMS, and all plugins.
3. Use Strong, Unique Passwords + Password Manager
Use a password manager (Bitwarden is free and excellent) to generate and store strong, unique passwords for every account. Never reuse passwords.
4. Regular Data Backups (3-2-1 Rule)
Keep 3 copies of data, on 2 different media, with 1 copy offsite. Automate backups and test restoration regularly. A ransomware attack is survivable with good backups.
5. Train Your Team on Phishing Awareness
92% of cyberattacks start with a phishing email. Train your team to recognise suspicious emails and verify unexpected requests through a separate channel.
